IV dressings perform several vital functions:

1. Fixation of indwelling needle, and fixation of PICC and CVC.

2. Fixation of anesthesia catheter, pulmonary artery cannula, renal dialysis cannula.analgesia pump cannula.

3. Skin care of areas susceptible to friction or in humid environment, such as skin protection around tracheotomy areas. Skin care around bone knuckle during incontinence to prevent bedsores.

4.Care of mild bruise wound, incised wound and suture wound.

5. Fixation for other dressings.

Gather Supplies:

You will need the IV dressing (transparent film or gauze with tape), antiseptic solution (like chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine), and sterile gloves. 

Assess the Site:

Check the IV insertion site for any signs of infection, swelling, or redness. 

Clean the Site:

If the dressing is being changed, gently remove the old dressing and clean the site with antiseptic solution, allowing it to dry completely. 

2. Application:

Open the Dressing:

Carefully open the sterile IV dressing package, following the manufacturer's instructions. 

Position the Dressing:

Align the dressing over the insertion site, ensuring the transparent film covers the insertion point and the catheter hub. 

Secure the Dressing:

Gently smooth the dressing onto the skin, pressing down firmly to ensure good adhesion. For transparent dressings, the adhesive should extend beyond the insertion site and catheter hub. 

Secure the Tubing:

Use the securement tape or strips provided to anchor the tubing to the dressing and prevent accidental pulling. 

Avoid Stretching:

Do not stretch the dressing when applying it, as this can cause discomfort and potentially damage the insertion site. 

3. Post-Application:

Check Adhesion: Ensure all edges of the dressing are securely adhered to the skin. 

Monitor the Site: Regularly check the IV site for any signs of complications, such as infection, redness, swelling, or pain. 

Follow Facility Protocol: Adhere to your facility's guidelines for dressing change frequency and any specific protocols related to IV care. 

IV Dressing Cautions and Precautions

1. Check for Skin Allergies

Ensure the patient is not allergic to any components of the dressing (e.g. adhesives, transparent film).

Watch for signs of contact dermatitis: redness, itching, rash.

2. Maintain a Sterile Field

Always apply the IV dressing using aseptic technique to avoid contamination.

Avoid touching the adhesive side or the IV site after disinfecting.

3. Do Not Apply Over Infected Skin

Never cover signs of infection (e.g., pus, warmth, swelling) with an IV dressing.

Dressing may trap bacteria and worsen the infection.

4. Monitor the IV Site Regularly

Inspect daily for signs of phlebitis, infiltration, or infection.

If the dressing is loose, wet, or visibly soiled, replace it immediately.

5. Avoid Tension or Pulling

Ensure the IV tubing is secured to prevent pulling on the insertion site.

Excessive movement may dislodge the catheter or cause skin injury.

6. Use the Right Dressing Type

Choose transparent film dressings for short-term IV use to allow visibility.

Use gauze-based dressings for sites with oozing or excessive moisture.

7. Change Dressing as Recommended

Follow facility or CDC guidelines: usually every 5–7 days or sooner if compromised.

For gauze dressings: change every 2 days or as needed.

8. Be Careful When Removing

Remove the dressing gently to avoid dislodging the IV catheter.

Use adhesive remover if necessary to avoid skin damage.
